Surgeon performs record 75 operations
Agra: A surgeon has set a new record by performing 75 consecutive operations in a single day using his "Single-hole surgical technique" at the Shanti Ved Hospital here. Dr. Ajay Prakash, aided by his wife and gynaecologist Divya, conducted the operations, including 69 gall bladder and six appendix operations.
Prakash's feat was meant to demonstrate the effectiveness and affordability of the single-hole surgical technique that he has invented. Last year, Prakash performed 62 operations using the innovative surgical procedure, an achievement that was also appreciated by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. In the past, doctors have carried out a maximum of 15 gall bladder operations in a single day. But Prakash's unique technique saves time, blood loss, post-operative care and other complications associated with the routine laproscopic surgery. So far the husband and wife team have performed over 16,000 operations in various cities, including New Delhi and Jaipur. Unlike the high cost gadgets used for conventional surgery, their technique requires equipment worth only Rs.10,000/- and involves a two cm. incision.
"My operations are less traumatic and dependence on equipments is minimal," said the surgeon. Prakash told www.mediabharti.com that all operations were performed free of charge and the recuperating patients were looked after by the local Lions Club.
